MONODIE 2.0 – MONODY 2.0 – MUSIC BY BEATA HLAVENKOVÁ
Translated by Mike Baugh and Petr Onufer
Track 01
Od úsvitu do soumraku
FROM DAWN TO DUSK / JQr
Now suddenly it hits and all comes together.
Now suddenly you catch the words of your mother.
Now suddenly you straighten up and read the first line.
Now suddenly there’s chaos, gorgeous in your mind.
Now suddenly your hand falls right where it should fall.
Now suddenly the future’s full and you know all.
Now suddenly you find yourself in a foreign land
Now suddenly you hear news you don’t understand
Now suddenly you’re following your own shadow.
Now suddenly you know nothing. And on you go.
Now suddenly you realize that it must diverge.
Now suddenly the cosmos close and bright shall emerge.
Now suddenly what you had to live for gleams bright.
Now suddenly the world flickers off.
Flicking on eternal night.

DAYBREAK / JQr
Night falls spent and wakes the Morning Star,
The world’s a wheel which around us flies.
Time’s a ribbon, thin and stretched too far.
Dreams wash upon the weir as water shoots off the bottom.
In the air the cheeping of chicks – the scent of elderberry blossom.
The song beyond is real, don’t close your eyes.
The East is fertile as the womb of your mother
As we pass through the day that turns into morning
Do we walk alone or is there another?
The pulse in your temple ticks away so silent
A sign the sun will shine above the horizon
Cast open your eyes and cast off your mooring
Track 03
Vteřina v lednu
A JANUARY SECOND / JAN SKÁCEL
And the day is quiet, fragile like eggshell.
The sun inside it shines stark white.
The trees, the roofs, the snow, all white as well.
This moment white, this second bright.
Track 05
V pravé poledne
AT NOON / JQr
Now the sun shines over the heads of the skyscrapers
The sky gleams gold between each leg
Honey drips from the hive, the world licks its fingers
Processors hum and warm up eternal features
Dens of clay cool down nocturnal creatures
Basking in the heat, for shade we beg
Life is written on a Möbius strip
But code is missing, the paper is torn
In love we find what’s skipped
In water broke from the womb, pouring outside
Time worn smooth swims against the tide
We all went through this once, when we were born
Track 06
Ale
BUT / VLADIMÍR HOLAN
Don’t ask
Why fall is poorer this year for one branch and one tree
Don’t ask
Why somewhere else the fallen fruit must rot in grass
Although there’s no sign whatsoever why to die
Don’t ask
How to meet when one of us will not come out to meet the other
Perhaps you will endure it
But will you wait and see?
Track 07

PILGRIM’S SONG / JQr
(For Saint-Exupéry)
They say the conflagrations
Across the planet
Quiet on command
Listening to the rain.
From that day forth
Choosing between two evils
Out of the blue
My pulse skyrockets.
Every single thing
In existence
Holds to the Center
Listening to the thunder.
Though the Earth is gorgeous
I can’t catch my breath.
But I’ve got a plan
To fire up my rockets.
Fly home.
Track 08

A LULLABY / LJUBA ŠTÍPLOVÁ
Night’s falling,
Dream’s crawling
Through the window, calling.
Silently scattering poppy seeds black,
Count them to make your eyes go slack.
Those insomniac, those awake,
Sense of them you will never make.
Frogs in ponds have been asleep for hours,
Bumblebees doze on petals of flowers.
Lizards slither off and flee,
Birds stop singing in each and every tree,
Nestled away in nests dark and deep.
Soon you too shall fall asleep.
Sweet dreams,
Nighty night.
Tomorrow comes
At the
Speed of
Light.
Track 09
Můra
THE MOTH / HANA PROŠKOVÁ
Again tonight I comb my hair and tie
It back. Attracted to the light
It gets lost and tangled in my hair
And flutters like a leaf. You came to say
I sleep alone?
When we were together
Moths even seemed bigger
They flew at us like birds
Smacking the lamp with monstrous wings.
I`ll never see something so big,
Yet I’ll sometimes hear
The howl pulsing through the air.
When we cut the lights, they’d watch us and stare
With those eyelids of theirs unblinking…

GOOD THINGS / JAN SKÁCEL
Of all the good things, I love fire
And the black silver of stars
Behind the belt of night.
Black silver and old words,
With which they knighted men:
Take these three blows and not one more.
Of all the good things, I love the day
When spring puts bridles on good horses,
Blue knots
And pink saddles.
It returns every year,
Spring is a good intention.
Of all the good things, I love our love,
The old one
That does not rust,
And I tell you again and again:
It is yesterday,
It will be today,
And it was tomorrow.
Take these three blows and not one more.

SORROWS / JAN SKÁCEL
There are three great sorrows in this world
Three great sorrows and no one knows
How to avoid these great sorrows
The first sorrow: I do not know where I will die.
The second sorrow: I do not know when it will be.
And the last one: I do not know where I will end up in the other world
That’s how I heard it in the song Let’s leave it at that
Let’s leave it as the song sings Let’s manage
To grab anxiety like a doorknob and enter…
Track 12
1121 – “Čas plyne dál”
1121 – “TIME DOES GO ON” / EMILY DICKINSON
Time does go on –
I tell it gay to those who suffer now –
They shall survive –
There is a sun –
They don’t believe it now –
Track 13
Ptal jsem se…
I ASKED… / VÁCLAV HAVEL
I asked the moon
If it knew
Why so many poems had been written about it.
It didn’t answer me.
And I looked at it
And I knew.
I asked the sun,
If it knew,
Why so many poems had been written about it.
It didn’t answer me.
And I looked into the distance
At many, many golden sheaves of wheat
And I knew.
